The GloCal Health Fellowship provides aspiring global health researchers with outstanding interdisciplinary education and training in innovative research designed to improve health for populations around the world.

The GloCal Health Fellowship is a 12-month program that supports, mentored research fellowship investigators who are interested in studying diseases and conditions in developing countries.

The GloCal Health Fellowship Training Program has four principal components:

  • Research Project Design – A 12-month, hands-on research project on-site with one of our 21 well-established, international collaborative partners
  • Mentorship – A strong, interdisciplinary mentored research experience
  • Global Health Education – Instruction in global health and related topics provided through online or onsite courses;
  • Career Development- Career development to help ensure that fellows attain their short-term career goals and transition to the next career stage

Funding is available for research related, but not limited, to the following topics:

  3. Biology
  4. Biostatistics/Bioinformatics
  5. Chemistry
  6. Geography
  7. Law
  8. Medicine
  9. Molecular Biology
  10. Nursing
  11. Nutrition
  12. Oceanography

  15. Pharmacy
  16. Physics
  17. Political Science
  18. Psychology
  19. Public Health

  21. Veterinary Medicine
  22. Women’s Health

The fellowship is designed for: US doctoral students (PhD, DrPH, etc.), professional students (MD, DDS, DVM, PharmD, etc.) and postdoctoral fellows, as well as foreign postdoctoral fellows from affiliated international sites in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

Requirements:

To be considered for the GloCal Health Fellowship, you must:

  • Be from one of the eligible countries
  • Be a citizen or resident of the United States
  • Have completed your basic science courses and one year of clinical training
  • Have demonstrated interest in, and statement of commitment to, a career in global health research.
  • Establish a mentor from one of the four consortium campuses if you are from a UC campus

Duration and Reward

  1. The Fellowship period will run for 12 months
  2. Successful applicants will receive 12 consecutive months of stipend support
  3. $15,000 Research funding for Fellows
  4. Travel costs to and from the LMIC site
  5. Support for online courses
  6. A week-long orientation on the National Institutes of Health campus in Washington, D.C.

Required Documents

To apply, candidates must be ready to submit the following documents;

  • Application Form (to be completed online here. )
  • Identification Number
  • Transcripts for doctoral and professional students
  • Research Plan
  • Clear statement of aims and hypotheses (note a hypothesis generating study, i.e.formative research, is permissible, but should lead to hypothesis driven future research)
  • Study design description
  • Inclusion/Exclusion criteria
  • Sampling of subjects
  • Description of data collection methods
  • Analytic Plan linked to specific aims and hypotheses
  • Sample Size/Power considerations
  • Discussion of next steps
  • Mentorship plan
  • Plan for 2-3 months on UC mentor’s campus (LMIC fellows)
  • IRB & Ethics Approvals Plan
  • Human Subjects issues (if applicable)
  • Animal Subjects issues (if applicable)
