Your application documents acts as your lawyers, so to say. They speak on your behalf once you apply for a scholarship. Any scholarship.
The documents are what gives you the chance to be shortlisted for the next stage(s) of a scholarship offer or even selected for the scholarship.
The scholarship application form is unarguably the most vital document. When requested, an application would be incomplete without it.
The application form in most cases serves as a formal request of eligible students by the university or sponsor for the available scholarship and is usually either filled online or uploaded after being downloaded and filled manually.
A CV is the summary of your academic and professional accomplishments lumped in one document; showing your educational, research, and work experience.
The first assessment of any graduate school advisor is your Curriculum Vitae (CV). An excellently written and well-formatted CV will 8 out of 10 times catch the attention of a potential supervisor in addition to other requirements.
Some scholarship applications, in fact, require you to e-mail only your CV and a motivation letter to a prospective supervisor.
The academic transcript gives the selection committee insight into your academic background and the credibility of the courses you offered at your undergraduate level. It is a very essential document.
For most schools in the United States of America, United Kingdom, and Canada, the minimum requirement for graduate admissions is a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent as clearly spelt out.
A high Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) also helps and makes the process very easy, however, students with low CGPA (2:2, Third Class and HND) can also secure fully-funded scholarships.
Note: the student copy of your transcript is still acceptable and final year students are eligible to apply for scholarships with the transcripts of their penultimate year.
A Statement of Purpose (SOP), also known as a research statement, personal statement, or a letter of intent, is an important component of graduate school application that tells the admission panel about your career path, interests, professional contributions, goals, and the driving force behind pursuing a particular program.
Personal statements are vital application documents, especially in the USA, and are usually between 400 to 500 words long.
This is a document that verifies all that you have said about yourself in your personal statement. But this time, it is not written by you.
A graduate school is considered not complete without a recommendation letter.
These recommendation letters (usually 2 or 3) are preferably from professors/lecturers with whom you have worked (researched) or have known you and can testify to your abilities and intellectual capacity.
It is advisable to let your recommenders know your intent to pursue a postgraduate scholarship and keep tabs with them so that they may submit your letters before the deadline.
In order to boost candidates’ chances of getting selected, they tend to write international standardized tests (although this is a requirement for some scholarships, especially in the USA) like Graduate Records Test (GRE) and Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).
Also, students from countries where English is not an official language or whose undergraduate degree was not taught in English are required to write English proficiency exams when applying for courses taught in English.
However, for students whose undergraduate programme were taught in English, a Letter of English Proficiency from their universities would be sufficient.
Common English proficiency exams are the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL), and Duolingo.
The passport guarantees that you are able to move from your home country to the country where you aim to study.
In most cases, a National ID card may be used if a student’s passport is not available.
Ideally, the passport document of an applicant should have an expiry date of 6 months after the duration of study.
Other relevant documents
Medical Certificate
This document usually reveals your health status and fitness as an applicant, any underlying ailment, and the ability to withstand different climatic conditions.
Proof of funds
In some countries, students are asked to present a document that shows that they can finance their studies should the scholarship be terminated. This is very common with partially-funded scholarships.
A bank statement revealing an equivalent amount needed to study in the said country for the whole period of the programme is sufficient as proof of funds.
Parents Income Status
Some scholarships request this document to confirm the indigent status of applicants. This is common for undergraduate scholarships.
]]>A graduate assistantship offers opportunities for students to engage in administrative, research, teaching, and other projects during their graduate study.
There are different types of graduate assistantships:
Graduate Assistant (GA): work 20 hours a week in an administrative position.
Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA): consists of teaching-related duties under the supervision of a faculty member.
Graduate Research Assistant (GRA): work with a faculty member on related research agenda or research conducted through external funding by a grant.
Graduate Teaching Associate (GTA): is the instructor of record for undergraduate courses in the specific discipline.
Graduate assistantship positions allow qualified students an opportunity to gain experience while continuing their studies.
Here are ten steps on getting GA/GTA AND GRA POSITIONS IN THE US.
1. Get an optimized draft of an Academic CV, SOP (Statement of Purpose) and LORs (Letter of Recommendations).
2. Get your Academic Transcript. Merge CV and Transcript in one PDF.
3. Get 4-5 research areas that aligns with your course of study. Note, that some of your research interest may cut across several departments. E.g. Material science is a research interest of a Chemistry, Physics, Polymer Graduate. Gender Studies and Diversity is a research area of International relations, Public administration, Sociology, Political Science.
4. Search out universities with professors in your research interest. For Example: Go to google and type; Professors in War Studies in the US universities. Make a list of these professors. You can take same steps on twitter or LinkedIn.
5. Sieve through the Universities to find schools with waived GRE (Graduate Record Examinations), TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and Valuation.
6. Be on the look-out for for virtual open days, school fairs and application waiver codes.
7. Apply to as many schools as have your discipline or professors with your research interest.
8. Search for advertised positions and send in an irresistible Letter of Intent. A strong letter of intent is built on a proper research of the type of work carried out at the Lab or workgroup making the advert placement. There are usually hundreds of such offers on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc.
9. Look out for Universities in the Cold Regions of the USA. They usually have less applicants and therefore lesser competition for you.
10. Prime your CV for GRA/GTA/GA offers. These funding positions that waive tuition fees and pays stipends ranging from 18,000 to 26,000 USD are usually awarded to Graduate students who show capacity for Research, Teaching or Administrative duties.
A lot has been written about how to get GRA/GTA and GA positions in the US. Go through previous posts and and start out bright and strong for this admission season.
We are rooting for you.

]]>When making your Scholarship application to Universities in the UK, you will need to submit some specific documents to prove that you meet the criteria.
The documents you need to provide with your Scholarship application depend on the scholarship in question. Some documents are mandatory and others need to be provided depending on your circumstances and what your school says.
What you will find in common throughout all courses and schools is that you will need to show competency in the English language.
Although this post will provide you with some useful information with which to arm yourself about what is needed to gain entry into UK courses, you should inquire specifically to any course that you are considering.
The following list should help you to work out what documents you will need to provide. It’s important to provide all of the documents needed, as not doing so can cause a refusal.
International passport.
Original WAEC or GCE certificate
Depending on what program you are looking at, the entry requirements will vary for international students. Most degree programs in the UK will require that the student have passed either A-levels and attained certain grades, for example 4 B grades, or equivalent grades in a BTEC or GNVQ. So within a university different courses will have different requirements and universities as a whole may have certain requirements that all students will have to meet. For example, the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge generally require all students to attend an interview, other universities will not require this.
English test (if the university requires it).
For most schools and courses, your level of understanding and competency in English will be key to your acceptance in a major program such as a degree program. You will need to make sure you have a good level of English understanding and you can do this by taking one of the following commonly accepted tests of English ability:
_
2. PostGraduate Studies:
English test (if the university requires it).
For most schools and courses, your level of understanding and competency in English will be key to your acceptance in a major program such as a degree program. You will need to make sure you have a good level of English understanding and you can do this by taking one of the following commonly accepted tests of English ability:
_
And of course, you will need a Student visa (for both Undergraduate & PostGraduate Studies). Depending on the university you are applying to, you may only need to provide these documents to them and they will sort out the bills (that is once your Scholarship application is accepted).
So the documents you need to provide with your visa application depend on your circumstances. Some documents are mandatory and others need to be provided depending on what your CAS says.
A CAS is an electronic statement which includes information about you and your programme, and contains your unique ‘CAS number’. The university will send your CAS statement to you by email, once you have met the requirements for it to be issued.
Your CAS contains information about your studies. You will need this information to complete your visa application form. You cannot make a Student Visa application without a CAS.
By issuing you with a CAS, the university is agreeing to act as your Student Visa Sponsor.
It’s important to provide all of the documents needed, as not doing so can cause a visa refusal.
Student Visa document list
Passport
A current passport or other valid travel documentation.
Qualifications stated on your CAS.
All qualifications listed in your CAS. You should note that if no qualifications are listed in your CAS, you are not required to provide any.
English language evidence.
UKVI ask for proof of your knowledge of the English language. Universities can choose how they assess a student’s knowledge of English. Your CAS will confirm how your English language ability has been assessed by the university. If it has been assessed by you providing a certificate or qualification, then this will be listed in your CAS and you must provide the certificate listed. If no English language qualifications are listed in your CAS, then you will not need to provide any with your application.
Translations.
If any document is not in English, the original must be accompanied by a full translation. The translation must contain:
Proof of finances.
You need to provide evidence that you have a specific amount of money available to you for tuition fees and living costs in the UK.
The types of document you can provide to prove your finances are:
Please note that it is important to provide finance documents which meet the requirements, to avoid a visa refusal.
Letter of consent from government sponsor.
If you have received any official financial sponsorship from a government in the past year, you must provide a letter from this sponsor which confirms the sponsor’s consent for you to make the Student Visa application.
Proof of your relationship with your parent or guardian.
If the funds you show are held under a parent’s name, you must prove your relationship to your parent(s). Birth certificates or adoption certificates are accepted.
Letter from parent/ guardian.
If the funds are held under a parent’s name, you also need a letter from your parent(s) or legal guardian(s) providing consent for you to use the money. The letter does not need to follow a strict format, but it must be signed and dated.
Proof of parental or other legal guardian consent if you’re under 18.
If you are under the age of 18 when you start your studies, you will need to provide a letter from your parent(s) or legal guardian(s) and also your birth certificate or adoption certificate.
Your tuberculosis test results
If you’re from a country where you have to take the test. Note that if you have been living in a country for the past six months where the TB test is not required, then you will not need to provide this (If you have been living in the UK for six or more months, then you will not need to take a TB test.) See the UKVI information on TB tests to check if this applies to you.
ATAS Certificate (Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate).
This is a certificate required by some postgraduate students. (It does not apply to students on undergraduate programmes of study.) You should note that it takes approximately one month for an ATAS certificate to be issued. Your CAS will confirm if you need an ATAS certificate.
Police Registration Certificate
If you are applying from the UK, you will need your police registration certificate, if you are required to register with the police
Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS)
This is the electronic document that you will receive from the university via email, which is essential to making your Student Visa application. You should note that as the CAS is electronic, you only need to provide the CAS reference number in your visa application form and there is no requirement to provide a paper copy.
If you are a national of a country listed under the differential evidence requirement, you do not need to provide qualifications or finance evidence with your visa application.
However, you may still need to have these documents available, because UKVI reserves the right to ask you to send them the documentary evidence during the processing of the visa application. If you are asked to provide the documents and cannot do so within a specified time, it is likely that your visa application will be refused.
Whether you fall under the differentiation arrangements or not depends on your nationality. You can find a list of nationalities that fall under the differentiation arrangements in the gov.uk information on financial evidence for a Student Visa application.

The admission process usually starts at the end of November/December of the previous year, i.e. 2023 closes by the end of July 2023. But don’t wait till the last moment because most of the top universities consider admissions as early as January.
So, if you wish to secure a seat for yourself in those universities, it’s better to apply as early as possible. Here are some of the things you should check up before applying;
1. PRELIMINARY REQUIREMENTS

Your CGPA/Scale = X
US Equivalent = X/4
Example
Let’s say you have a CGPA of 3.8 on a scale of 5
The conversion is;
Your CGPA (X) 3.8/5.0 = 0.76
conversion factor – 0.76*4.0= 3.04.
Your US Equivalent
Your CGPA is 3.04 on 4.0 scale
2. SEARCH REQUIREMENTS

]]>In September this year, a US university withdrew the PhD studentship of a student after it was discovered he plagiarized the writing sample he submitted for the PhD admission. This alone should create in your mind the seriousness US PG schools attached to writing samples. This piece attempts to furnish with the basis of what constitutes a good writing sample
What is a Writing Sample?
A writing sample for graduate school is a piece of academic essay that demonstrates to the admission committee your academic prowess, research ability and your proficiency in your chosen field. It is a key part of your graduate school application.
For almost all US schools and particularly in the Humanities, the writing sample is one of the most important elements of an application to graduate school. Developing a strong writing sample is a particular challenge to students from outside of the United States because they do not understand the idiosyncratic conventions of the US academy.
What is the Goal of a Writing Sample?
The best way to demonstrate your academic ability via a writing sample is by discussing an issue area relevant to the position or program for which you’re applying.
Choice of Appropriate Writing Sample
Your writing sample should be representative of the kind of writing, analysis, research or publications you hope to achieve as a graduate student. This will provide the admissions committee with a clear understanding of how you might fit into their program.
If you are applying to a research-based graduate program, such as Ph.D. or Master of Science, your writing sample should demonstrate your experience preparing research papers.
Likewise, if you are applying to a professional program, such as a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) or Master’s in Public Administration (MPA), then a paper that demonstrates your experience preparing business case studies or policy analysis, respectively, would be relevant options.
For a Master’s of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, your best creative writing sample should be included. For a Journalism program, a long-form journalistic article would be best.
In other words, do not submit a writing sample that does not reflect the nature of the work you will be doing in your graduate program!
Note: Unless you are applying to a graduate program in creative writing or journalism, your writing sample should be academic in nature, showing a scholarly engagement with ideas.
Avoid submitting essays, memoirs, blog or newspaper articles, or op-eds that you have written and instead choose papers you have prepared for your coursework.
Think about the specific research that you have done and what you have contributed to your field so far, and choose a sample that showcases your ability to synthesize a lot of information and introduce new ideas.
How is a Writing Sample Assessed?
According to Dr. Martin, reviewers are generally assessing samples for the following criteria:
How long should a Writing Sample be?
Samples should be concise and succinct: one to four pages are usually sufficient. In many cases, reviewers are primarily interested in how well you convey your ideas (structure and grammatical accuracy) as opposed to content.
Parts of a Strong Academic Writing Sample
If you are submitting an academic paper, make sure it contains all of the following sections at minimum:
• Title page
• Abstract
• Introduction
• Body
• Conclusion
• List of references
How to submit a Writing Sample?
Whether you submit an entire piece or part of a writing sample, it can be helpful to write a short introductory paragraph for context. You might include it directly on your sample, on a cover page or in your email. For example:
“Please find my writing sample for the Sr. Product Research Position attached to this email. This sample is a passage from a larger study about how product simplicity impacts consumers. I believe it showcases my ability to clearly communicate results from an important project that lead to key achievements for that company.“
]]>If you don’t have money to fund your dreams, you don’t need to be told that you need to work hard, very, very hard to achieve the same level of success like your counterparts with the financial means. You cannot afford to be broke and lazy. You cannot.
Can you study abroad with little to no funds? Yes. However, you will need to apply to countless scholarships and be ready to face rejections upon rejections. Having funds makes executing your dreams easy, as many things – school, jobs, relocation, exams, certifications – all cost money.
If you don’t have huge funds at your disposal, you have to become very resourceful and very hardworking. The road will be tough, believe me. You will have to take the stairs to success – twenty floors up.
Money serves as your elevators – can make your trip shorter and easier. But with minimal funds, you can still reach the top. It will take longer and will be more tasking. Prepare adequately for the road head.
You will succeed. But know that you have a price to pay.
Start paying that price today. ?
